This porcelain-topped steel cabinet was a free alley-find.

This porcelain-topped steel cabinet was a free alley-find.

When I found it, this cabinet was a rusted and peeling shadow of its former self, in powder pink. Unfortunately, it was just a bit too distressed. Some sanding, priming and spray-painting, and we were back in business with an updated, yet retro, feel.

This one wound up staying in the house. And if you can believe it, the carnival glass bowl and small, porcelain bowl to its right were also alley finds. Those came from two doors down.

JunkAlley writes: In the city where I live, there are alleys behind most homes. So when I run errands, I usually drive down the ones that parallel the streets of my route. I'd say that I've found the majority of my stuff within two or three miles of my home. There's plenty to go around. Come on down! Posted: 8:05 am on January 6th

Storage is one of the reasons why this piece was also claimed by my wife to remain in our home. It's pretty incredible how much stuff is in there now. Posted: 10:06 am on January 5th

I have one like this only it has only one drawer on top. I didn't do the total makeover; just painted it with bright red latex paint. They make great storage. Posted: 9:38 am on January 5th
