Kathy Stantz, Junk Heaven , OH, USmember
I was born to junk - always begging things from my grandma, and collecting rocks and avon bottles when I was little... I refinished my first piece of furniture when I was 18 - and havent stopped re-doing things since...
My friend, Terri, and I buy old furniture and great vintage junk - and paint, repurpose, etc. - and resell it at some fleamarkets in Ohio, and a few customers in central Ohio - we have a blast - always on the hunt for something! (Would love to quit my day job and do it fulltime!) We take girl trips (or junkets) every summer with two of our bestest friends, and have traveled into Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana - and of course - all over Ohio - one of our most fun trips was the Worlds Longest Yard Sale (250 miles thru Kentucky/Tennessee) four years ago. Next year, were planning on the 200-mile sale in Michigan (see you then, LuAnn!!).
My hubby is fairly understanding of my addiction - but says well never be able to move - too much stuff (I think not!!). My daughter shops my basement when she comes home to visit...(shes her mothers daughter for sure!!).
My personal style is cottage/beachy/shabby chic - with a little of this and that mixed in... I love to garden and am a collector of many things (my friend says if you have three of something its a collection - so...yep, Ive got a few!) Of course my favorite thing to do is hunt for additions to my collections (and pieces of interesting junk to play with) at fleamarkets, garage sales, thrift stores, antique shops - and sometimes its just dropped at my doorstep (friends and neighbors - gotta love em!) I collect pottery (mostly white - Haeger, Hull, etc.), vintage beach stuff - especially beach oil paintings, vintage jewelry, child-size chairs, and lots of other stuff! :)
Love the JunkMarket (aka Junkaholics Anonymous) - a great support group for junkaholics - HOWEVER, were not looking for a cure - just a whole lotta support!! Thanks to Sue for throwing us together.
God Bless!
P.S. Just a thought...
Junkers Creed
This is actually the creed of the postal service, but I think it fits SO perfectly for us junkers...
And neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, nor the winds of change, nor a nation challenged, will stay us from the swift completion of our appointed rounds. Ever.
Aint it the truth??? Have a great day & happy junking!

5. Suewannabeinkc - yep - we're in Ohio - here's the website: http://www.springfieldantiqueshow.com/
6. I better start putting together a mailing list - and we can start thinking about our little Buckeye JUNK party!

P.S. Janis - Terri has collaged for a while, and I just started (I made three new ones over the weekend) - they're so much fun.

posted: 4:41 pm on October 3rdKim - I bought this old paperweight (empty) at an estate sale - and added the buttons, cut a circle out of a piece of a vinyl wallcovering sample that I got from work, and glued it to the bottom. The paperweights are cool because they magnify the contents. Gretchen gave me the idea of using them and I decided to do buttons in this one - I think she had done some for an occasional sale. Re: Springfield Extravaganza - Part II - so much to see and so little time!

Janis - as far as prices - this show runs from garage sale finds to fine antiques - but our prices in Ohio (and surrounding states) are definitely lower than other parts of the country (so, it's definitely worth a trip for collectors or people looking to re-sell). And, thanks for the info on the shoe scraper - I can see that...
gailmarie & Jim - the green cabinet was in a friend's booth - I admired it from afar! And, I didn't buy any of the globes, but wish I would have. Sue will be checking in here - so, she'll hear about her twin! :)

Just a note...In your search for lamp bases, be sure to pick something that will hold up to the weight of your light fixture - you don't want it to be top heavy. These two pieces were surprisingly well balanced in weight and size. And, if a finial won't hold it together...I bet a little Gorilla Glue would do the trick, and then place something decorative over the hole to cover it up.

One of the large drawers could be pulled out and the space used as a shelf - to display pots, garden junk, etc...
Or, a drawer or two could be pulled out (for components to fit in), and it could be used as an entertainment center.
OK - stopping now - let us know what you come up with - can't wait to see pics!

Well, all I can say is - and being very truthful...THE PFARKEL SISTERS SAVED OUR SORRY CAMPER BEHINDS - seriously! (I guess you could say we were just a tad "high maintenance" being the "experienced" campers we are...ha ha). I really think we had just one thing on our minds when we set out that morning (a bit behind our anticipated 7:00am departure time...wink wink) - and it was nothing but JUNKING! But - at least we remembered the tent and sleeping bags!
posted: 9:08 am on August 18thSetting up the tent was big fun - and I believe there is a photo circulating (thanks to our dear "tweet" Candy) that refers to how many JMS girls, Pfarkel sisters AND Tomboy Tool gal does it take to set up a tent? You don't want to know...
The Pfarkels are amazing - SO much fun...and we even got a peek inside the big camper - love the flamingos ladies!!
Note to my fellow JMS contributors...Next year we'll be alongside the Pfarkels in our "Airstream"! :)
Hugs from Ohio! Kathy

jakiparrot - I've visited the Renninger's Antique Extravaganza in Mt. Dora (very cool/quaint little town) - and they have monthly shows, but the Extravaganzas are in February and November - over 1000 vendors. It's an awesome show!

posted: 9:26 am on July 30thSecond...what an awesome piece of furniture. For placement, it looks like it could sit on the floor, hang on the wall, or maybe sit up on a cabinet or table (like a small farmhouse table...).
As far as what to put in it...like others have said it could be functional - in the kitchen or a craft area (that's where it would be in my house...ha ha) to organize. And, like audlyenuf said - boxes or baskets with labels or tags so you don't forget what you've organized - for me, if it's out of sight...it's definitely out of mind.
I think a mix of a collection of things would be cool - seashells, bottles, and just random old stuff - not necessarily in every cubby - that would keep it to a less cluttered look.
It'd be great in a child's room too - they'd have lots of "little things" to stow away. And, how cool would it be in an entry??? Anyway, I got a little carried away - it IS just such an awesome piece! Hoping to see pics of what you do with it!!

Re: Sometimes it's ok to break a dish (or two)...
Stellaluna,
posted: 10:49 am on July 21stHere are some thoughts (I'm sure others have some tips too - please share!!! We can all use a little help from our friends!!)
Breaking: I put my plate, tile, etc.. in a box wrapped in a towel (so, in breaking, pieces don’t fly…). (And, check it each time you hit it - to maybe pull out pieces that are the size you want...). If you want the piece/design to stay intact, (before breaking) I’d cover the back side with masking or duct tape to hold the pieces together, so you’re not trying to figure out what goes where…(or even take a picture of it before breaking). (Be sure to wear safety glasses when breaking and/or using tile snips.)
Some basic supplies:
Gloves (use when breaking glass)
Safety glasses (use when breaking glass)
Hammer
-Tile snips (for plates or tile) (can be used to cut in more uniform pieces – try this on a practice piece to see how it works. I cover the piece with a cloth while I'm cutting it.)
-Tile adhesive (to put the pieces in place prior to grouting)
-Tile grout (sanded) (this can also be used as the adhesive instead of tile adhesive)
-Grout sealant (optional)
-File (to file down sharp edges – if necessary)
Tips:
You can lay your pieces out on the tabletop (or whatever surface you choose), and use the grout and/or adhesive to stick pieces in place…allow to dry, and then start filling spaces with grout.
After applying grout, be sure to wipe tile/pieces with a damp cloth before grout dries on surface (follow directions on container).
If you’re doing a bowling ball – be sure to clean the surface well (to get rid of oil from the bowling alley – if it was in the gutter a lot – like mine is...there will be more oil on the surface - haha) – I use soap and water, and then rubbing alcohol - you could even sand it a bit.
To work on it, I place it on a stand of some sort (I have a metal candle stand that I use - for a large candle.) – this will help hold it in place. I also put a towel over the stand (provides a bit of a cushion for it to rest on – it helps protect the pieces that you’ve already adhered to the surface as you turn it.). Allow an area to dry well (I let mine sit overnight) – and then you can move it to begin on a new area. This process takes a few days – if you move it too soon, pieces will slide and/or fall off. (Again, be sure to clean the grout off the surface of your tiles with a damp cloth after its “set up” a bit.)
Good luck with your mosaic - hope to see it in a future post!

Hi Tabitha, and welcome to JunkMarket Style!
posted: 10:14 am on June 29thWill the trunk be in a protected area like a porch or deck? I might just line it with some kind of vinyl or plastic (maybe a vinyl tablecloth with a print to it, or at least a color that's better than black plastic) - you should be able to staple it in place, and then put some different containers of plants in the trunk - then you could easily water or change the plants, move the trunk, etc... If you have a few small containers you could set a small table or stand inside and arrange your planters around it (for some heighth).
That's a great piece for "planting"! Good luck and please share the finished project!
Take care, Kathy

The cuff on the bottle is ingenious, and I can picture you going through pickle jars at the store...too funny! (Remember, they probably have cameras...it makes for good entertainment I'm sure.)

Re: On the road again...
Thanks for all the comments everybody. Unfortunately...Mother Nature won this one...we had a few hours of clear skies in the morning on Sunday (started selling at 6:00 a.m.), but rained out by noon. There were still those diehard shoppers trudging around, and there were some sales - we covered our expenses - but, that's the fleamarket business...
posted: 2:00 pm on April 20thHOWEVER, it was a girls' weekend and we had our two friends with us - we had a blast on our travels, made a couple new friends - found some really great junk (will post later) and wore ourselves out laughing (that's a good thing!!). After we got back, I left my friend's house - and on the way home found a "gift" by the side of the road - a "free" sign sitting in front of an old wooden hand plow "thingie", so I had to turn around (as it was screaming at me to put it in my garden), and threw it in the back of my (already pretty full) van! So...all is well!!! :)
Also, we were invited to be vendors at an Antique Festival in Waynesville, Ohio - it'll be awesome - Waynesville is called the "Antique Capital of the Midwest"...it'll be huge fun and a great show!
Thanks again, everyone!
