my dad did the same thing with a Budweiser crate like this one over twenty years ago and now my daughter is using it in her new apartment and loves it too; I would snatch one up in a second if I find one; yours looks great

also be on the lookout for microwave oven glass turntables. They are heavy, heatproof and great to have on hand. I am using one to sit our coffeemaker on because it generates a fair amount of heat onto the laminate countertop and the tray is a perfect size for it to sit on permanently. I added sticky felt pads on the bottom ridge so I can slide the coffeepot/tray and not damage the laminate countertop.
