Refunction Junktion. I have a small warehouse space where I
make my one-of-a-kind home furnishings and accessories from doors, windows, shutters, sporting goods, textiles, board games, and any other junk I can get my hands on. I also host workshops to let people try their hand at creating unique pieces for their home. One weekend a month I let the public come in for shopping. I love talking trash with other junkers and really enjoy seeing all the creative projects of others. I just started a blog -- Having fun with Junk -- and invite you to check it out if youd like to know more about me or my business.
Hope youre having fun with junk too!

Candy, ARE YOU SOME KIND OF GENIUS??!! That is such a GREAT post! Hilarious! Have to admit I had to get a little help on JARS (just a little slow today). Love the oil can for witches! Never been a big fan of scary movies, but do remember in high school catching Motel Hell-- hotel guests were planted in the garden with there "heads" as heads of cabbage(?). Couldn't decide if we were supposed to be scared or it was comedy. Anyway, I've seen The Shining (just last year for the first time), and of course Jaws, but that's about it for the list. Halloween night I'll probably be watching Fox News -- some might feel that's about as scary as it gets!

We already DO do a show & tell, of sorts, here on JMS, so maybe we could ramp it up a bit -- a show & tell on steroids kind of thing. Maybe events, competitions, junk olympics, seminars, junk tours, food, spooky junk stories in the dark. It'd just be fun to get together and keep the junk love going. Oops. Sorry to ramble.

Hey all! Just wanted to report that this presentation went much better. I think I'm getting a handle on timing, but it means I have to exclude many things I would like to talk about -- oh well. (Candy, I have heard from others that it would be neat to see a project made right in front of them and I always envisioned doing your 4x4/test tube/centerpiece but fought the urge -- again not enough time.) I was able to relax more and use more humor (my opinion). Kenda and Sue, I so respect your insights as you've both "been there". And Sue I'm especially taking to heart your advice on simplicity. Not my forte, but I'm inspired and working on it and will be posting more "simple" projects. Thanks all.

Re: Old windows and doors
Wow, what a great haul of old doors and windows. I've done the corner shelves and coffee table projects and they're great. But if I had a door that sweet, with all those awesome panes, I would make a MAJOR project. Either 1) A Dining room table. If you get a secondhand slider door from say Habitat, you get 2 big pieces of tempered glass for WAY cheaper than ordering. Then design the door/tabletop to fit. OR 2) Some sort of armoire/display case with either each as a side or a stationary front pieces to left and right with center open.
posted: 9:00 pm on August 24thIf you weren't up for a major project I would clean it up good and mount flat on the wall horiontally long as a photo display or hang from ceiling (photos optional) as a room divider. Well, you probably should rust it up a bit. But after that, you have lots of possibilities. Add 2 bottom brackets as "feet" for a fireplace screen. Hang from ceiling flat as a candleier or potrack. Or flat on wall as potrack or jewelry holder. But I think it would be the coolest hung flat on wall and using the horizontal rods to suspend pictures, small potted plants, candles in small glasses, etc. These are all pretty standard ideas, but now you got my mind whirling. If I think of anything original I'll post again.

Re: Need ideas!
My first thought was that they would be cute attached to the bottom of a lampshade as "fringe". If you wanted to be realy themey, you could make the lamp from a vintage milk bottle or bottle carrier. They also would make cute shingeles for a bird house, but not sure how they would hold up in the elements. You could also attach magnet on the back as cute refrigerator magnets (but who would want 100's of these on the frdige door?).

Oh, what a great piece! It would make an incredible headboard, but I can see how you might not want to take your work into your sleep time, and I agree with kenziebr, it needs to be shared with others. So I guess I'd probably vote for adding shelves for display or corkboard for notes, photos, etc. It's probably to tall to set on top of a desk, so if it sets on the floor, maybe adding a bottom and some feet and place in a very public space for display.

Re: Do you see what I see?????
Oh, wow! What a beautiful pile of junk! The first thing that jumps out at me is the stars. I LOVE them! If they're big enough, they would make great tabletops if you add a round piece of glass. The trash can upside down like that could be the base for a different table. The shovel heads could even be funky feet for a table. (I must have table on the brain.) Great pile of minnow buckets, I have a hard time getting them at a good price. Great for flower arrangements, but they also make great lamp bases, wall sconces or funky birdhouses. I've never had the metal spindles, but I love what I've seen others do with them. Maybe for a table setting to add height, especially when paired with round holey things. I like the round cagey thing with the cone top, too. Something with a light or candle? Great post, Christy. I'm anxious to see everyone's ideas.

Re: Towering blast from the past
Snowman -- You DEFINITELY could make this using hockey sticks. It would be awesome. You wouldn't even have to cut the top board in half, just drill holes big enough for the sticks. Or, what about the net for the headboard and the sticks as bed posts. And another project is if you take three sticks standing up with a hockey puck between (one high, one low) and attach together. Add hooks and you have a coat rack. Or wire up and add a shade and you have a floor lamp, or cut it shorter for a table lamp. Also, you could trim out a big bulletin board. Sorry, I got a little excited! Hockey sticks are great for so many projects! I'm sure your son will love whatever you do. Have fun.

Re: The City Floor Lamp and the Country Floor Lamp
Thanks for the positive comments on the lamps.
posted: 5:45 pm on December 22ndI'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but the learning I did had nothing to do with wiring or construction but more to do with decorating and patience. It was actually a pendant lamp I was planning -- a suspended megaphone. Because it was plastic, I spray painted it with plastic spray paint but apparently didn't let it dry enough. As I was making it, sticky yellow paint was getting on my sweater, sweater fibers were getting on the paint, the chain was getting wound up and making matters worse. I'll proabably salvage it...later.
As for the surveyors stand, I always wanted one so made up my mind to get it when it came up on a local online auction. I paid $35 for a set of 2 different ones. That's unusually big $ for me, but the pick up guy said that was a great price. Who knows? The other one is yellow and I will take photos as I go and post them when I make that one into a lamp.

Lived there my whole life, and now have a litte shop there where I try to sell my wares (it's harder than I thought it would be). A junking adventure sounds fun -- we could be on the lookout for angel goods (and potato mashers).

Re: Another dessert stand, just my version
Thanks for the comments, I'm glad you like them and would like to make some, too.
posted: 1:50 pm on November 26thUpyourattic -- I love your idea about filling the glasses before gluing them! I'm going to try that if I make any more.
As for the glue, I used basic 5min. epoxy, the kind where 2 tubes squirt at the same time and you mix together. It was $1.98 at WalMart. You don't need much at all because too much will drip and form strings and you can't get them off. I heard people talk about glass glue, but I don't know what that is and have never seen such a thing. (Of course, I live in a small town and I don't get out much!)
Have fun with your junk!

Re: old deck chair
Cute little deck chair! I do like rustic things, but in this case I'd probably vote painted white or some other cheerful color. But that's just me. Good job on all your great free finds.

Re: salvaged architecture pieces
Those are SWEEEEET! You definitely can't mount them on the wall because they would need suppot. I was thinking the same thing about a desk/sideboard. It only leaves a few tiny holes because the floor is holding most of the weight. Corbels flat side against wall and other flat side up for the desktop. Screw top down into corbels. Then put L brackets underneath where the top hits the wall (make sure it's into a stud, the desk is going to be heavy). Two more near the floor where the corbels meets the wall.

At this time of year, more than missing him, I am keenly aware of what a great Dad I had and realize what a blessing that is. More and more I'm finding that a lot of people never experienced that.
Thanks again for your project and for posting it so others can share in that. If you haven't already done so, I would encourage you to contact your local newspaper and suggest they do a story on it. I think it would make a great human interest piece. Take care.

Re: Hardware angel ornaments
Thank you so much! I am sincerely honored and grateful for your recognition. I've had fun posting since joining up, almost as much fun as being in my workshop. Thanks to everyone for all the supportive comments and I plan on returning the favor and, of course, continuing to post. Thanks once again, you've made my day!

posted: 10:34 pm on November 22ndRe: Oh?! Did you think these were vintage radios?
Oh, boy. Not sure if I even want to respond but thought that I should. I must say that I'm not very knowledgable about radios or electronics (I'm more of a construction type person). However, I only paid a few bucks and it didn't work, so I assumed that part of its life was over and even if it could ever work again, most would rather listen to modern radios. The value to me was its exterior charm, which I retained. I try to take the invaluable and make it valuable again, even if it's in a new way. That being said, as I removed the interior parts it occurred to me that radio people might covet some of them so I saved what seemed like it might be needed for parts. I have a pile of the little tubes and anyone who could use them, please let me know and I would gladly send them to you. Thanks. Midge
