I am a long time junker and lover of all things old. I am from a family of treasure hunters and as a child remember pulling up to many old homesteads with my parents and two siblings. We would get out and dig for the day--oh, what treasures we would find! I love repurposing junk and finding new ways of incorporating it into home decor.
I am also the busy mom of three boys and a very bad dog, and work as a pediatric nurse. I have been inspired by Junk Market for a few years now. Joining this site is a way of supporting and thanking them for keeping my creative juices flowing!! Thanks Junk Market!!

Re: CHALKBOARDS

Hi...just to answer a couple of the questions...
Shamrockerin: I like to use a primer first which preps the metal to receive the paint...then spray with a few coats of the chalkboard spray paint.
Kenda: So frustrating to have the paint peel...yes, that has happened to me too....now what I do is score the edges of the tape with an exacto knife...it breaks the seal so the tape lifts up without pulling up the paint. I do think that the black marker would be a good solution for filling in!!
Hope that helps.

Re: VINTAGE TROPHY CUPS

Hi All,
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments!
Gretchen did a tutorial last year on "how to dye bottle brush trees".....it is the same method that I use and here is the link to her post...
http://www.junkmarketstyle.com/item/3959/how-to-dye-bottle-brush-trees
I love to add glitter after the dying process and do this by painting on a clear drying glue and then sprinkling on the glitter...silver glitter looks pretty on the white trees as well as white glitter. Hope this helps!

Hi Kathy,
I so enjoy seeing these posts, as we don't have anything that compares where I live. I actually can't believe my eyes looking at all the amazing finds--very curious to know what the pricing is like. Our local flea market has changed in the past few years and now it is mostly new cheapy dollar store stuff.
I think the thingy you didn't know about is an old shoe cleaner.....people used them to clean the muck off the bottom of their shoes before going inside.
Happy day my friend.

I once decorated for a fundraising event for people living on the street-----I went around collecting hubcaps off the side of the road and used them for centerpieces---anyways, when I saw your last project (it reminds me of the inside of a wheel thingy) I thought those would have made awesome centerpieces with the glass on top.

Re: "PARISIEN ADVENTURES"

Thank you ALL so much for the wonderful comments!!! I really appreciate you all!!!
Just a word about the vinyls...........yes, they are hard to find!!! I found a scrapbooking store called "treasury of memories" in Bellingham, Washington that you can order vinyls from on line. Just google search them----they will do any font, size and wording for you. You can also buy sheets of vinyl letters at office supply stores. Also, asking at your local scrapbooking store might be helpful--sometimes they can order in stuff they don't usually carry.
Hope that helps.

Re: "NURSERY RHYME JUNK"

Thank you all SOOO much for your encouraging comments....I really appreciate them!!
In answer to some of the questions you had: As I frequent my local thrift stores I, too, frequent Michaels and the scrapbooking stores in my area looking for interesting rub-ons. You can also make your own rub-ons using a special paper usually found at scrapbooking stores. Vinyls are fun and easy to apply to almost any surface as well. You can make your own vinyl rub-ons (the possibilities are endless) using machines such as the "wishblade". I do usually clear-cut over top of the rub-ons, but not the vinyls.
Hope this helps....happy junking (and crafting)!

Re: "WHOLIE DOILIE!"

Hi Judi
I guess you can say that I don't really take care of them at all. These particular doilies sat in a box for years...now I just hand wash them in some Woolite and hang to dry. If they are particularly messy after washing I'll just take the iron lightly to them. And I don't worry about the odd stain as I think it adds to the vintage appeal.....mind you I definitely take them off the table if we are having sphagetti!!!
Hope that helps.
xojanis

Re: "WHOLIE DOILIE!"

Thanks so much for the feedback my junking friends. Yes, Judi, please do come on over and we'll junk the day away!!! I added the words to the glass container and will definitely do a post on the how-to for you guys.

xojanis

Re: HELP PLEASE! Sideboard and Hutch is not me....Can you ladies help me with some sort of painting technique?

You know I have to say that I agree with italianpeasant....I had some beautiful old pieces of furniture from one of my grandmothers, but I just didn't like the wood stain so they stayed in the basement for years. When I finally took the plunge and painted them I was amazed at how the detail in the woodworking just "popped"!!! They are now my most prized possessions and I don't feel at all quilty about painting them. I, personally, would go with white as it really seems to bring out detailing, but I think you have to decide what would look best with your own style.
I also recommend using "bulls eye" primer....it is amazing and doesn't require messy sanding to prime the piece for paint.

What ever you decide please show us the after pictures.
Good luck!!!
xojanis

xojanis

Re: "LIGHT IT UP!!!"

Hi rebeljunker.
"Whitewash"(to me)simply means thinning your paint with a little water (colour of your choice), putting a little on your brush (I wipe the brush on paper towel to remove some), then paint your surface. This way the original surface shows through. The alternative would be to paint as usual then sand to roughen up and show the underneath surface.

Hope this helps.....I seem to learn most things through trial and LOTS OF ERROR!!
xojanis

Re: Old metal mailbox turned Recipe Box Rolling Pin Holder

Beautiful. I must find one to hold all my scrapbooking stickers and rolls of ribbon on the thingamajing (as Sue would say)!!
xojanis

Re: "LIGHT IT UP!!!"

Thanks junkers....so glad you liked. This was such an easy project and I can't believe I didn't think of it years ago as I have long been racking my brain trying to think of ideas for old ashtrays as they are so many around.
Yes, texasjunker, it is a vintage bracelet. It didn't quite fit around the candle so it is tied in the back with some ribbon. I also wrap old necklaces around my candles.
Have fun!!

Re: "MERCURY GLASS??"

Hi Judi
I mean REALLY EASY.....like you can do it at the same time as cooking supper--helping with the math homework--folding laundry kind of easy. You know us crafting moms--MULTI TASKING is the name of the game!!! (LOL) No, honestly it is very easy and yes, the silver leaf is found at Michaels in the same aisle as the glues (you also need to buy a jar of the "metal leaf adhesive size").
Hi Geo
I didn't do the inside of the glass because I didn't think the candle light would be so visible through the two layers.

We just redid our master bath before Christmas, but I still have to add my junking style to it to make it my own. One day I will shop at your store in person and get to see this bathroom real time!
xojanis

Re: Valentine cards.......using old postcards.

So pretty!!! Gosh I'm finally "getting it"--didn't think to scan my originals to use for projects. I'm always so hesitate to use my vintage postcards for projects because I don't want to part with them. Now I can keep the originals and use copies for projects. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks Carolyn

xojanis

Re: THANKS GRETCHEN!!!!

Hi Birdie
Love your idea with the vintage teacups....I saw that in a magazine once as well. The little cup that my tree is sitting in came from my grandma's things....turned the other way it holds a tapered candle. It is marked AVON on the bottom.
xojanis

Re: How to Make a Christmas Candelabra

Oh soooooo pretty Georgia. I love how you attached a little Christmas ball on the end of your crystal drops.
xojanis

Re: THANKS GRETCHEN!!!!

Thanks again ladies........
Gretchen.....I painted on glue with a paint brush and then sprinkled the glitter on...I don't really like the spray glue as it seems to stay sticky whenever I use it. I liked using the hot glue gun for the baubles as they dry immediately so you don't have to fiddle.
Georgia...you are so sweet....I just love setting up vignettes for the pictures....would like to take some photography classes..that's another on my list of to-dos!!!
xojanis

Re: How To Make A Santa Snow Globe

xojanis

Re: More on "Etching"

Hi Lani
Yes, that sounds about right for the etching cream....I bought mine a while ago at Michaels and remember thinking it was really expensive, but..........a little does go a long way and the directions say you can remove it after using and put it back in the container, although I haven't tried that.

I always use the vinyl letters that you can buy at Michaels or a office supply store, but on this one I tried an epoxy sticker I had and it, too, worked beautifully. The problem I have with the vinyl letters is that there isn't much choice with the fonts. Now that I know some types of stickers will work I am soooooooo excited. Hope this helps.
xojanis

Re: More on "Etching"

Candy
Love the "fetching etching"!!!!

Just stunning as usual Candy!!
xojanis

Re: Let's Go Skating!!

Thanks for the positive feedback ladies. You are all so sweet and a continual inspiration to me. Lani, I use rub-ons on everything as I have a very unsteady hand when it comes to painting (although I am anxious to try that paint pen you used)........scrapbooking stores and Michaels are a great source for them. Once they 'set' they seem to stay on even outdoors (but do wash off in the dishwasher).
xojanis

Re: My "JUNK" Tree

Thanks so much junktique! Let me know if you would like some help with the lights and I'll send you some more detailed instructions.......they are really so easy to whip up.
xojanis

Excellent post. Thanks for the inspiration!!
xojanis

Re: Tag Maker Tote

UNBELIEVABLE SUE!!!! This is just awesome!! Listen, just a quick question if you by chance check the post......I just found an amazing old sewing desk (like none I've ever seen before!).........BUT........it looks to be veneer and it is peeling off in some parts, plus the desk is ++++++ musty. I don't want to buy it if it can't be healed with some TLC. Do you think there is hope for it? If I was to paint over the peeling veneer do you think it would look okay?
xojanis

Re: "Junk Friend"

Hey Gretchen
The rhinestone thingy at her hairline is an old shoe clip I had that I thought looked a lot like a crown so I glued it on. My other crowns are TBA.

Re: Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

Hey Gretchen
Yes, I have made moss balls. Just use a round stryofoam or florist ball and attach moss using wire plant stakes and green florist wire or string. I love my moss balls, but they aren't so great here in the summer as they dry up.
xojanis

Re: Not-too-shabby "cashier" table

Thanks so much for the info about the shutters Kathy...I'm just in the process of hanging them right now.
xojanis

Re: Not-too-shabby "cashier" table

Kathy....I wanted to ask you how you hung the shutters. Did you screw them right on to the wall or use a hanging kit?
Thanks,
xojanis

Re: Not-too-shabby "cashier" table

Kathy
This is beautiful and so creatively put together with the use of different pieces. Just love what you did with the cutlery holder, and the papers you picked look great. You won't want to cover them up with all the money you make! I am still so inspired by your room makeover you posted a couple weeks age...today I hope to get my shutters hung above my crafting desk. Thanks for all your great ideas.
xojanis

Re: Stool Idea

That is so funny about the cat being in every picture. The paper she used on this stool is gorgeous....I wonder where she got it.
xojanis

Re: Winter Wonderland & Old Book Display

I, too, love old books and am so happy because I recently found a used book store near me that has some great finds. I especially love vintage music books.. My problem is that I don't like the smell that comes with them as it makes my eyes water!!
You create such great whimsical displays Vecernice. I always love looking at your posts.
xojanis

Re: Vintage Typewriter Gets a New Home

Mind sharing your paint info?? Also, did you spray the evergreen--it looks great.
xojanis

Re: Vintage Typewriter Gets a New Home

Wow Gretchen, have you ever been busy!! Painting, LAYING TILE, junking and creating beautiful displays!! This looks outstanding (I'm not one to play around with a lot of colour, but I absolutely love that apple green, and might have to try it!!) The entire vignette is beautiful with the black and white accents (our favorite!!!).
This typewriter idea is just tooo great!!!
xojanis

Re: Dreams

I love what you did with this old door plate. I have some I got just because I wanted the old knobs attached to them, and now you have shown me a great project for them. Thanks!!!
xojanis

Re: Another Door Project

I love your door and I have one sitting out in my yard that I must get at and do something with. Was it easy to attach the shelf....did you screw or glue it on?
I also love how you put the sweater cuff around the cup....sooo cute, as are the fancy pine cones. I had some white pine cones I glittered, then tied pink ribbon around and attached to my tree last Christmas.
You have three great projects in one post. Great job!!
xojanis

xojanis

Re: Holiday Home Tour

Oh Lani. What a gorgeous, gorgeous picture. I would so love to come, but it is just a bit tooo far away. Could you be sure to post some detailed pictures for those of us who can't be there?
I absolutely love your style.
xojanis

Re: Lighting Dilemma

Hi Tracey
Have you seen Geo's post called "Bicycle Lamp Revisited"? I see the frame of this chandelier working perfectly for something similiar to her Christmas version. Myself, I would definitely spray paint over the brass with white or black.
Your mirror/glass thingys would be stunning with words rubbed, painted, or etched on and then hung with pretty ribbon... I had some large flat chandelier crystals I did this with and they turned out beautifully.
Can't wait to see what you do. You could always mail me a box of them (ha, ha...just joking).
Have fun.
xojanis

Re: Traveling Spa

This is really cute Sue. I have some old hat boxes, but find they smell very musty inside so generally keep them shut. Do you have any tips for removing the musty odor?
Thanks.

Very cute!! I am so mad at myself as I left several windows similiar to this in the attic of the last house we lived in. Wouldn't it be cute to do one with vintage Christmas pictures?
I love that you chose black and white pics.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Advice needed for project

Hi Geo
Beautiful piece!!! There is a small attachment you can get for a dremel which would do the trick--it is a small circular cutter that cuts easily through metal. You could trace the board design on the back of the tile then start cutting away (use a metal ruler to cut against to keep your line straight)--that way the frame you are left with will be in one piece without any denting. Can't wait to see your resulting projects.

Re: Dare to Make it Holiday Challenge

Hi Nomer
I am a fellow Canadian and live outside of Vancouver, BC. Don't know if you've tried your local Value Village and thrift stores, but I find them to be a great source for reasonably priced junk. Your job sounds very interesting. I will keep my eyes open for some ideas for you. What about having people embroider(?sp)simple things on pieces of cloth cut from old clothing. You could then put the pieces together to make a pillow or quilt. You might look into "felting" old wool sweaters as there are lots of things people can sew out of the pieces (mittens, stockings, pillows, etc).
Hope this helps.

Re: from hitching post to bookcase

Such a beautiful story related to a junk piece! That is definitely one of the reasons I so love old junk....to me, each piece evokes memories of days and people gone by. I love how you revamped these for enjoyment in your own home. Great work!

Re: And...A Cozy Guest Room Too!

Again, what an unbelievable combination of outstanding junk pieces. So CHIC!!!! Love how you incorporated the trellis.

Re: An A-Door-Able Desk & More!

Hi Kathy
Could you please do a stopover in good old Canada as well?? Wow!! I LOVE your style. Wow, wow, wow can you imagine all the cute vintage things you could hang off the shutters!! I am on my way upstairs right now to a storage closet to grab some my mom gave me and I didn't know what to do with.

Re: another window / another idea

You did a beautiful job!! It looks gorgeous. I must admit I even fell in love with the before picture....I just love chippy old paint! Where on earth did you get the large eiffel tower print...I collect eiffel towers and would love to try this exact project.
Thanks for inspiring!!

Re: Old Chandelier Turned Fabulous

I love chandeliers and am always buying those yucky brass ones to redo, but I would love to hear about your rusting process with the salt. I usually end up sticking things in my garden through the winter months to rust them after I've spray painted. I also tried a rusting kit I got at Michaels, but didn't really like the look.
I can't wait to see what you have planned for this. Please keep us posted.

Re: Weekend Finds

Oh, LuAnn, I forgot... I wanted to ask you about those orange/apple things....I've never seen or heard of them. Do you know if they are edible? I wonder if they can be dried somehow for decorative purposes--they are really beautiful and so very unique.

Re: Weekend Finds

LuAnn
I love your finds especially that rusty heart shaped thing and those springy things!!! I wish I could have some.
Happy junking!

Re: Junk Pockets

Definitely black thread (or white). I don't buy in any other colors!!! (just joking).

Re: Junk Journal

Oh, hey guys. What would you say is a fair price for gift tags or journals?
xojanis

Re: Junk Journal

Once again I have to say I love this site!!!
I haven't tried selling these journals Lani, but would love to cause it would give me reason to make more!!! I do sell some of my other stuff.
Gretchen, I just use a plain old glue stick for gluing and haven't noticed any edges pulling up, but if it was in my purse it probably would. I love your idea about the purse sized ones. I also use decoupage medium a lot, especially if something is going to be handled because it coats the outside and protects it. I made some beautiful gift cones out of scrapbook paper and the decoupage gave them more substance and weight. I'll post some pictures of the cones another day.

Re: Junk Journal

Oh, hey guys I was just thinking that Georgia's plant stakes would make great book markers for this project. We could paint or decoupage paper onto them and then write names or inspiring words on them.
Gee, thanks again Georgia!!

Re: Junk Journal

I tried to find those black and white ones, but couldn't so figured it didn't really matter what was on the front. Your right junkinhart these make great gifts done up as something that the recipient loves. I have made some for friends and filled them with inspiring quotes or recipes and others as diaries (just glue two pieces of ribbon to the back and wrap around so the diary can be tied closed with a bow).

Re: Junk Pockets

You guys are sooo sweet...your comments always inspire me to do more....thanks. Gretchen, I too, saw this as an idea using scrapbook paper, but wanted somehow to make it a junky project. I forgot to mention that I sewed up the sides of the folders with a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine. That way they are true pockets, cause the problem I have with file folders is that every thing falls out of them.
I'm working on a set for my niece with pages and illustrations from an old Alice in Wonderland book I found.

Re: A Store that Built our Junk

Okay, I absolutely love the idea about the letters, and I see a "D", "I", "O", and possibly "H" in this building. Beautiful.

Re: Rustic Elegance Floral

Hey Sue.
Just wanted to tell you that I love it when you do the guessing game thing!! I can't believe the things you find.
Could I go with you junking sometime?
xojanis

Re: Rustic Elegance Floral

Absolutely stunning and what an array of unusual items you've used to create it. Sue, you never cease to amaze me. Thanks for all the inspiration.

Re: Silver Lights

Yes, exactly the ones in the Dept.56 houses. I had no luck finding the kits any where in the vicinity of where I live, but easily found them on line. Thank goodness for the computer!!

Re: Silver Clocks

Hi Cynthia. You'll find the answer to your question in my post titled "Last one I Promise". Forgot to mention there that I also use the vinyl letters a lot.
xojanis

Re: Baby Shoe

Hi Cynthia.
I think your black patent shoes would look adorable with some words (white lettering) added, like "princess", "precious" or a name. And how about adding some white sheer ribbon with black polkadots for the laces! The shoes would be so pretty in a shadowbox as well. I did some old skates which I will post closer to Christmas.
xojanis

Re: Silver Clocks

Hi Georgia. Yes, it is soooo easy to drill through silver. Just make sure you are using a bit made for metal and not wood, and watch your eyes as the little pieces sometimes fly up.
xojanis

Re: Last one I Promise!!!

Hi Junkin4fun. Sorry it has taken me a few days to respond to your question. For most of my lettering I just use plain acrylic paint and stencils, but I am a big fan of the scrapbooking stores and even though I don't scrap book it is amazing what you can find in those type stores to incorporate into your junk finds. Clear stickers work well and I have discovered that rub ons work on absolutely EVERYTHING!!!!! Right now they are one of my favorite things!!! I also recently tried some glass etching stuff which worked beautifully for lettering. Good luck. Let me know if you try any of these things and I would love to see the pictures.

Re: A Deal for Minnesota Junkers - See Description

Gretchen: Your jewellry is amazing. I wish we could get together to work on some collages. I bought some of those glass slides and holders, but haven't been too happy with anything I've put inside them. You've inspired me to keep trying.

Re: Funny or embarrassing junking stories, anyone?

I have a terrible junking story... For months I kept driving by this run down abandoned house hidden behind trees in the area we lived in. I kept thinking, "WOW, I bet there are some great finds around that property". Well, I finally got up enough courage to park my car, get out and walk gingerly down the weed covered driveway. I was so excited... there were some old boards and piles of junk just sitting around the yard. I went up to the front door to check it out (I was really into doors at the time and prepared to take it off the hinges right then and there!). Anyways, I had the shock of my life when a very old man opened the front door and asked just what it was I was doing. I almost died!! I apologized profusely, of course, telling him I didn't realize any one lived there. Turned out he was 98 years old, living on his own and walking a mile three times a week to get his groceries. After that I checked in on him every once in a while to see if he needed anything. I learned my lesson that time and I sure don't stop at "abandoned" houses any more!!!

Re: Silver Lights

Hi Kimberly. Thanks for the comments. I use any glass/crystal item I can find that fits the top so the light can shine through. Old crystal bottle toppers work well for smaller openings. You could also use an old ashtray, candle holder, plate, or bowl. Sometimes I embellish the top of the lid with an old crystal bead as well. Hope this helps.

Re: Junk Finds in my Gardens

Hey Gretchen. Wasn't sure what the best way was to get a message to you, so thought I would try this. After two days of looking I finally found that close-up icon you were talking about. Thank you so much. It is a fairly new camera and I've never bothered to read the direction booklet and have been very frustrated with the pictures I have been talking. I am so glad to find that closeup button and wouldn't have without you. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. Hope you're having a good day.

Re: Getting Ready for Christmas

Hey Gretchen. Yes, they are flat on one side. I saw what you did with the old crystal and the Eiffel tower picture and I absolutely loved it. I collect Eiffel towers and love anything Parisian!! Last year I put some vintage christmas themed pictures on the back of crystals and used them as ornaments. Got the idea from the book, Vintage Christmas. Anyways, thanks for all the encouragement. Not many of my friends or family are into junk and decorating so it is so nice to share with like-minded people.

Re: Bottle Art

No, can't say I'm that creative!! They came with the bottles.
