My self-imposed junking intervention (aka organizing my basement workspace...)

I have two worktables, I use one for collages, and the other for building/painting.  I get vinyl tablecloths from the Goodwill and use them till theyre worn out...
In the background - my entertainment center for viewing my favorite chick flicks while I work/play (Sleepless in Seattle, etc...)
The black trunk is stuffed with lots of fabric.
Lots of shelves and containers - for glues, string, wire, crystals, etc...
My old fashioned wireless computer (oops, manual typewriter) - not used for surfing the net!
A nice rusty shelf for old purses/baskets to store paints, stamps, etc. for collage work.  The shelves below are tilted, so everythings in view...
Lots of pieces and parts - out in the open - and screaming to be used...
Handles, knobs, etc...

Well...I've been organizing my basement workshop - and wanted to get things out in "plain sight" so I'd know what I've got to work with - you know, if it's "out of sight...it's out of mind".  Just hoping it doesn't look like the local thrift store blew up...

My "space" is about half of the basement (and I'm really trying to keep it contained...), so shelves have really helped (and I've started hanging things from the rafters too - ha ha!!).

I've also posted on my blog - more pics with more ideas for storage - or, if you're looking for "junk overload" :  www.sylviasdaughter.blogspot.com

shabbychick writes: Thanks for your comments! I'm organized now, but once I get a few things going...watch out! Oldnews...by the comments I've had, it sounds like our little junk worlds are very "normal" to each other...ha ha!! :)

greencolleen - Pendant lights?? hmmmm..sounds cool - and how the heck would you drill into those??

whiteflower writes: Wow! you really are organized. This would be my dream space. After we refinished our basment for the kids - I had to go the garage. I'm jealous. Posted: 7:32 am on March 20th
oldnews writes: It really is fun to see where everyone else creates. Makes me feel a lot more normal! I have a workshop outside for dirty work and a huge room inside for "clean" work. Not very organized because I always have a dozen things going on at once, but I know where everything is and I guess that's all that really matters! Posted: 11:24 pm on March 19th
greencolleen writes: got a catalog the other day and they had made the absolute best pendant lites with insulators. and you have a whole stash of them . so sue oh goddess of the junk how the heck do you drill thru those insulaters??? Posted: 10:20 pm on March 19th
shabbychick writes: greencolleen...I feel like I've been busted...I have a Goodwill store in my basement! Having a smaller space is probably not a bad thing...because if you've got too much space, you expand to your surroundings (I'm still expanding...)

JunkArchitect writes: I have no organization whatsoever when it comes to my junk stash, it’s just one big pile of junk. I don’t think I’ll ever get as organized and neat as you. My kids became concerned awhile back when I actually threw some JUNK away. Posted: 9:57 pm on March 18th
shabbychick writes: Sue - it was definitely self-imposed...and took many nights "piddling" around down there (I'm easily sidetracked...) to get into a semi-organized state! Still more work to be done...

recycledromantic - good luck with organizing your space - and welcome to the club - a year into junking - you're gonna have sooo much fun!

gio - we should probably "pool our resources" and have a heck of a sale!! :) (anyway, just say the word, and I'll be over - looking forward to seeing you and all the great junk you've been "swuirreling away" this winter! Posted: 6:27 pm on March 18th
italianpeasant writes: kathy, now i don't feel so bad; i know where all the good ohio junk is yours & my basements. mine looks like yours only scarier, because in the one corner you'd think vincent price would be there LOL. i'm almost ready for you to come over & wipe me out, been painting up a storm :) gio Posted: 6:11 pm on March 18th
recycledromantic writes: I have been trying to get my work space and thrift storage organized and it seems to be a slow process. So I too am jealous (in a good way) that you have a basement and have been able to get organized. My space is small. I need shelving too. I hope to get some soon. I started junking last year and I too have squirreled away a lot of things.
I can't wait to get started on it again. Other obligations have gotten in the way, but I always seem to eventually get back to it. You're doing a great job! Can't wait to see what kind of projects you'll be able to turn out with all of that creative inspiration. Keep up the good work! Posted: 3:35 pm on March 18th
suewhitney writes: You always make me smile Kathy! Love the "self imposed" comment. Your basement looks great and very functional. Would love to join you for a chick flick creative session!

Be Well,

shabbychick writes: Thanks for the comments and for "braving" my workshop/basement... What's scary is...there's even more that you didn't see! I think I could work for a couple months down there and not have to buy a thing - guess I've been "squirreling it away".

thehillbillies - I'd like to drill into my concrete walls too...gotta run that one past my hubby! Mine is definitely organized chaos (perfect way to put it!).

alicemom/snowyowl - no basements...yikes! I'd have stuff piled in my upstairs (with a path open to the tv and fridge...haha) - or a huge shed in the backyard (that's an idea too!)

Candy - You definitely need to carve out a little junking/crafting place in your basement (before someone else finds a use for it!) - and be sure to allow room for "expansion"! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! (P.S. You'll have to come shopping in my basement!)

Janis - will share some pics soon!!

Junk_Sophisticate writes: Ahhhh! Your junking basement looks great. So well organized with a load and a half of wonderful goodies! I am so torn with what to do with ours it is currently unfinished. Right now, most of my junk is in boxes or on a few shelves with no organization whatsoever. Thank you for the inspiration to rethink what needs to happen down there, ASAP!!!

snowyowl writes: I love your basement. How speical it is you have your own room for crafting, junking, whatever. I loved looking at all of your collections and possibilities. Yes we in Texas dont have basements typically. some older homes do and some older churches and banks do. Pretty neat - we are all jealous. Posted: 7:07 am on March 18th
alicemom writes: I'm glad y'all have basements! We here in Texas do not!! So I am jealous again. I do love to see everyone elses junk & your is great. I also can not keep my table or house straight. IT's all our creative juices flowing.
smiles,
alice

fellowjunker writes: So, so fun to see your work space Kathy. I am dying to see some close ups on some of the projects. Boy it looks so organized...hope it lasts!!! If you are anything like me the trouble is nothing gets put back in its proper space until I have a meltdown and go on a re-organizing binge.

thehillbillies writes: I have been organizing my basement as well- and mine looks like yours... right down to the pink floral canisters I saw in one of your pictures! I have been trying to figure out how to hang things from the rafters, drill shelves into my concrete walls... looks like organized chaos... that's what I like to call my madness! Good job!
