Little Sophie is so proud to be a junker-in-training she even wears it on her shirt.
Ethan, my main man junker. Shortly after this picture was taken we spotted him in his grandads booth (my good friend Richard of Poor Richards fame) sound asleep on a pile of tools. Junking really does take it out of you!
These little ladies came to visit me several times throughout the Oronoco show. Adorable times three! I think they have already become JUNKMASTERS!

Antiquing, flea market shopping and junking can be just as much fun for the kids as it is for you. Get your kids interested at an early age and they will become the consumate recyclers without even knowing it. Here are a couple of tips:

1. Make the day fun by including some of their interests in the itinerary. A picnic lunch at the park mid-day, or a trip to the local ice cream parlor after a day at the flea market will keep them smiling

2. Make a game of it. When my kids were young I gave them $5 at the beginning of the day and concocted a contest of who could find the coolest thing for $5 bucks or less. They are now very good shoppers.

3. Get the little ones interested in collecting. Point them in the direction of something you know they'll love. From a very early age my daughter, Elizabeth was drawn to old letters and jewelry so the first stop while junk shopping was always at a vendor displaying one of these two items. The rest is history!

Do you have any other suggestions? Please let us know!

rutermaker writes: OMG!!!!!! Thought my hubby and I were they only ones that did this. We have so much fun and so do they. All six of us can spend a great day doing this. The only funny thing is when we go into a small shop. The owners get nervouse and by the time we leave we hear wow your kids are very good. Posted: 8:40 pm on October 8th
MimiToria writes: What a great post, Sue. I got my start in junking from going with my Mom to garage sales all the time as a young, young child. I remember the 1st item I ever bought. I was about 7 and it was a pink chipped up depression glass pink cup. It has long since been gone, but my 2nd item ever was a sailboat pottery coffee pot that was purchased for $1.00 and still is in my ownership. I display it lovingly at our cabin. Junking does start early.
Wish I would of done a better job with introducing my daughter to junking. Hopefully, she'll get the bug one day! Posted: 11:15 pm on September 19th
