I replaced the concrete logs with real ones I cut from a birch limb that fell from our tree. I found some orange LED string lights online. Every fourth bulb is a blinker -- instant embers!
The top is half of a bi-fold closet door to which I added edge molding. Can you believe this beautiful plywood was the wrong side of the door!

Just redid the "fire" in the box. Looks and works much better now, and I have the lights on a timer so they come on for a few hours each night. Also repainted the gray brackets a copper/bronze color. Reclaimed/salvaged/already-had materials used: plywood, closet door, moldings from Habitat Restore, resin shelves, xmas lights, wood stain, screws, concrete logs. Bought new: some screws, liquid nails, spray-on texture, paint, shellac, and one piece of molding for mantle edge.
