Old vintage yardsticks look great as a chair rail in a small room or on a big wall.  Layer them to make the width/height of the rail you want.  Simply velcro or use a staple gun to attach.  You can also use them above the baseboard to finish out the space.  FYI: the black wall under the yardstick chair rail is not painted.  Cheap black roofing paper was used because we weren't sure if wanted it painted.  You can actually write on the roofing paper with chalk so it's a cool thing.  (Note:this is an idea from a friend who helped with this space; I would love to take the credit but can't.)

I'm using yardsticks for the risers on my basement stairs. I saw an example of it on the internet -- maybe on this web site -- and just loved how it looked. I can usually find at least one yardstick at every estate sale, auction or rummage sale I attend. And if I'm lucky, it's a really old one. Gosh, now I want to use it as a chair rail. I love this as a chair rail! Especially in a room with other woodsy artifacts. Congrats on the feature! Well chosen. :)
