Engine Crate turned Planter Box!May 19th, 2011 in member junk
My dad gives me these great engine crates to make planter boxes out of. I made a black one last year with lattice...so be sure to check out my other posts. But this year I needed one for the front entry so I could plant my tomato plants with class. So my dad snagged another crate for me. But it was not a finished as the first one, so I had to put some finishing touches on it! But since my Navy Seabee (Construction Guys who build our bases) little brother just returned from Afghanistan, I put him to work dressing up the crate.
First I bought a bunch of cedar fence boards (that smelled divine!) in 4” and 2” widths. I stained them all with outdoor stain in black. I then stained the crate itself in a green color for contrast.
We put the 2” boards on top, and 4” boards on the bottom as skirting to cover up the ugly bottom of the crate. We caped the top with boards and 45’d the angles to it had a nice finish.
I snagged a pic of him working intently…then well…if there is a camera…there is a face!
Completed with 4 cherry tomato plants and various other annuals…next year I will replace the annuals with fresh herbs! Doesn’t it look awesome? I love it!
