I LOVE birds! I live in International Falls MN and what do you do in the winter??? Feed the birds. We have so much snow already, that their food is pretty much buried.
If you want to feed the grosbeaks, it works best to use a huge open tray feeder. I use an old door and it works perfect. The red ones are male pine grosbeaks.
I built a box, and put in on top of the door to hold seeds. I also put seeds directly on the door. The yellow ones are male evening grosbeaks.

I feed the birds all year, but winter is my favorite time. I get all kinds, but watching the grosbeaks is so fun, they are beautiful. I also have a pair of pileated woodpeckers that come and visit everyday.

artteachergirl writes: Clever idea! I love feeding the birds too. I had close to 20 blue birds in an old bird bath the other morning...it's dry and they were eating berries that had fallen in there. There were a few cardinals and chickadees mixed in...beautiful sight!
We don't have much snow in GA, but they still have a hard time eating in the winter. I may try your door idea! Posted: 4:27 pm on January 1st
