Organizing for Christmas ....AND BEYOND!

I chalkboard painted the front, the rest of the piece can hold magnets for notes, jars in the 3 holes hold pens or whatever. You could add a loop of string to the bottom to hold bows.
I added a hook to one side for tape, keys, whatever.
To the other side I added an old pull that holds scissors.
This is the REAL intended purpose.  When you no longer need the wrapping paper handy, you have a place to hold some file folders.  I added two metal crossbars for holding them.

No, no connection to Toy Story, I just didn't feel like using my same lame chicken jokes and this IS a recycled chicken feeder.  I originally started this project this summer.  Decided to  paint it first -- BIG MISTAKE.  Painted over it with white -- not much improvement.  Meanwhile other things just were not working so I set it aside.  Pulled it out again and decided to try again, this not time merely as a desk organizer, but also as a Christmas organizer center.

So, the final product isn't everything I dreamed of, but I think the concept is good.  At Christmas time you can organize your Christmas things and the rest of the year can be for basic desk stuff.

I have one of those in my basement - going to put it on my "to do" list for after New Years! Thanks for the inspiration.

Joanne -- the mistake was not in the technique of painting the feeder, but more in my color selections. Painting the metal was actually a very easy process, I didn't even prime first. The metal took the paint very nicely, so much so that I could barely remove it when I found I didn't like my colors. I think your idea of painting your hog feeder would work really well and it would add a nice touch to it. I used chalkboard paint out of a can and brushed it on, but there's also a spray version that a lot of people like to use.
Enjoy.

(suppposedly it's a hog feeder) I like the idea of putting chalkboard paint on the front, but is there a reason for me to reconsider that? It's hung by our front door and has been great for holding extra keys, and posting messages with magnets. The slots on mine are perfect for holding mail. I LOVE the idea of using it for a holiday organizer! Never thought about file folders fitting in it either. (Something I'll have to check on...)
Thanks for sharing this creative and inspirational idea!

LOVE you "tale of woe" - don't we ALL have those kind of stories??? - I guess that's what makes us all appreciate our finished projects so much (once we struggle with our mistakes beforehand). You should be very proud of yourself. I can see this being used a LOT!!! gailmarie Posted: 10:52 am on December 13th
